- 1/2 cup neutral oil (canola recommended)
- 1 package (16 oz / 454 g) tofu
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 1/4-1/3 cup water
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/3-1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha (optional)
- 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
Instructions
- Press the tofu: Drain the tofu and press between paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- Cut the tofu: Slice the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes.
- Prepare the coating: In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, and salt together.
- Coat the tofu: Add water to the dry mixture until it forms a thick batter. Dip each tofu cube in the batter.
- Fry the tofu: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and fry the coated tofu until golden brown.
- Make the sauce: In a bowl, combine orange juice, sugar, tamari or soy sauce, rice vinegar, Sriracha, ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes.
- Thicken the sauce: Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer and add a slurry made of cornstarch and water.
- Combine: Toss the crispy tofu in the sauce and sprinkle with orange zest before serving.
Notes
Pressing tofu well is key for crispy results. Use fresh orange juice for better flavor and adjust sugar to taste.
